Our Vision
The Wetipquin Community Development Center envisions a future where the historic Rosenwald School of Wetipquin stands fully restored and renewed as a living symbol of education, resilience, and community pride. More than a preserved building, the Center will serve as a vibrant, multi-generational hub where history is honored, practical life skills are taught, and connections between past, present, and future are intentionally strengthened. Preserving Our History
The Rosenwald School represents a powerful legacy of self-determination and sacrifice. Built through the collective efforts of Black families, educators, and community leaders during a time of segregation and limited opportunity, the school stands as a testament to the belief that education is the foundation of progress. Our vision is to preserve this history with accuracy, respect, and pride—ensuring that the stories of those who built, supported, and learned within these walls are never forgotten.Building a Bridge Across Generations
We envision the Center as a place where generations come together. Elders and retirees share lived experiences, cultural wisdom, and practical knowledge, while youth gain mentorship, guidance, and confidence. Veterans, educators, and volunteers lead by example, modeling discipline, service, and responsibility. This intentional exchange ensures that valuable life lessons are passed down rather than lost.
Educating Through Practical Life Skills
Beyond historical preservation, our vision includes hands-on education that prepares young people for real-world success. Programming will focus on practical life skills such as financial literacy, basic home maintenance, carpentry, gardening, workforce readiness, civic responsibility, and conflict resolution. These skills empower youth to navigate adulthood with confidence while reinforcing values of integrity, self-reliance, and community responsibility.
A Community Hub for Learning and Gathering
The restored Center will serve as a welcoming space for classes, workshops, meetings, cultural events, and celebrations. It will be a destination for students, families, researchers, and visitors seeking to understand the legacy of Rosenwald Schools and the history of Black education on the Eastern Shore. At the same time, it will function as a peaceful retreat and gathering place that strengthens community bonds.
Sustainability for the Future
Our vision includes long-term sustainability. Through restored facilities and the addition of a community pavilion, the Center will generate modest rental income to support maintenance, preservation, and programming. This approach ensures the Center remains financially responsible, community-driven, and mission-focused for generations to come.
A Legacy That Endures
The Wetipquin Community Development Center is more than a restoration project—it is a commitment to justice, education, and community empowerment. By reclaiming and revitalizing this historic school, we affirm that Black history is American history and that rural communities matter. Our vision is to leave behind a legacy institution that continues to educate, inspire, and unite for decades to come.
